ADHD/ADD/Focus Issues

We all get distracted, lose things, and have trouble sitting still when bored at one time or another.   However, when focusing difficulties occur on a daily basis, affecting one’s school, work, social, and/or or life functioning, it may be ADHD.  Specific guidelines must be met to determine if a person has ADHD, according to the DMS (diagnostic and statistics manual).  Symptoms must be significant and more frequent than those experienced by others the same age. 

ADHD/ADD (Signs and Symptoms from DMS)

The DMS is used by health professionals in varying fields of practice to assist with diagnosing ADHD.  The following is an ‘overview’ in laymen’s terms for understanding and informational purposes.

Inattention (six or more of the following symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity have been present for at least 6 months to an extent that is disruptive and inappropriate for developmental level)

  • Often does not give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities.
  • Often has trouble keeping attention on tasks or play activities.
  • Often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly.
  • Often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace (not due to oppositional behavior or failure to understand instructions).
  • Often has trouble organizing activities.
  • Often avoids, dislikes, or doesn't want to do things that take a lot of mental effort for a long period of time (such as schoolwork or homework).
  • Often loses things needed for tasks and activities (e.g. toys, school assignments, pencils, books, or tools).
  • Is often easily distracted.
  • Is often forgetful in daily activities.

Hyperactivity/Impulsivity (six or more of the following symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity have been present for at least 6 months to an extent that is disruptive and inappropriate for developmental level)

  • Often fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat when sitting still is expected.
  • Often gets up from seat when remaining in seat is expected.
  • Often excessively runs about or climbs when and where it is not appropriate (adolescents or adults may feel very restless).
  • Often has trouble playing or doing leisure activities quietly.
  • Is often "on the go" or often acts as if "driven by a motor".
  • Often talks excessively.
  • Often blurts out answers before questions have been finished.
  • Often has trouble waiting one's turn.
  • Often interrupts or intrudes on others (e.g., butts into conversations or games).

Diagnosed or Not, We Can Help

It doesn’t matter if you or your child has a “diagnosis” of ADHD/ADD or not.  A diagnosis “labels” behavior that is observed and seen.  Medication can help, and may be necessary for some to function, but it isn’t a lasting solution or your only option.  Parents need to become aware of another approach, executive functioning (also known as cognitive processing skills) testing and training. We all use these skills every day to focus, learn, read, listen, remember, and plan.  Tutoring will continue to be a “short fix” until these skills are fully developed.  When these skills are weak, they interfere at school, work and home.  Coping with these weaknesses often results in frustration and behavior difficulties.  Your child can have ADHD and/or under developed processing skills, compounding his or her difficulties.

Medication for ADHD is Not the Only Answer

It doesn’t matter if your child is on medication or not.  In fact, if your child is on medication, performance can be enhanced and improvements will be permanent.  There may even be the possibility of reducing or eliminating medication with a final OK from your doctor.

Bypass the Downward Spiral

Intervene now before your child begins to or is feeling defeated.  Many children with ADHD often feel powerless and give up once they realize “trying harder” isn’t helping.  Some develop behavior problems to cope with these painful feelings.  Instead of being seen as dumb or stupid they begin to wear masks to “fit it” and “cover up” their inadequacies.  As a result, additional medication may be prescribed to help with the by products of depression and anxiety.  While we cannot eliminate ADHD/ADD, we can significantly lower the affects it has on your child.  Diagnosed or not, we can help your child be happier and achieve success, without the need for continual support.
